ASO (Agentic Search Optimization), GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), what’s the difference? Nothing. They mean the exact same thing.
Generative Engine Optimization was the first AI acronym created by the Internet Marketing geniuses, but try to use it in a presentation and you’ll probably stumble every time you try to say it. So it’s been replaced by ASO – which rolls off the tongue much easier.
The funny thing is, these are simply new terms that are 5 years old in practice. About 5 years ago Google introduced the PAA section (People Also Asked) in search results. If you migrated your content to the Q&A format that gets you into the PAA results, you dont need ASO (or GEO).
So without the hyperbolic wankspeak, let me explain in layman’s terms what you should do to get into AI results.
Migrate your content as follows:
- What similar product/services are out there? (similar to PAA but in a different format – what choices do I have?)
- What is special about this product/service? (differentiation – why this one is better than the others?)
- What don’t I know about this product/service? (new information – differentiation)
- Why should I buy this product/service? (popularity, reputation)
No cookie-cutter short-cuts: now comes the hard time-consuming part of integrating this into your existing content or creating new content. The content must be tailored to the product/service because obviously all businesses/products are different. But the concept is simple. From here, its a matter of individual creativity to implement/integrate ASO/GEO into your website content.
